How to Choose a Song for your First Dance

First dance… It’s one of the couple’s first moments as new husband and wife. So how do you prepare in choosing the song for your first dance? Here are some pointers that might give you a hand to avoid choosing just a random song and end up wondering “Why the heck did we choose this song?!”

MORE THAN MELODY… IT’S WORDS

Don’t just listen to the melody of the song and how well it goes with the kind of dance that you chose. Take into consideration the words of the song, as well. Although you plan on playing it instrumental, some people would still be able to recognize the song and might know the lyrics. We wouldn’t want them to pick out the song’s meaning as being irrelevant to the occasion or the mood of the event.

MEMORIES DO WORK

Pick something that is memorable. It might be a song that you heard when you first had dinner together or the night he asked you to get married. If the tempo of the song is not right for the kind of dance you plan to do, you could adjust both ways. Either choose a different dance (if you and your partner are so into the song and you wouldn’t want anything else) or use a musician’s talent and get the song re-arranged to suit the dance.

CLASSICS NEVER FADE

Choose one of the immortals or classics. Search the internet and there would always be tons and tons of wedding dance songs that have always been used and have worked for couples before you. With such choices, perhaps there’s no reason for you to go wrong anymore.

READY TO COMPOSE?

Get creative and try your hand on song writing. This might be a big challenge (especially with all the pressure and stress of wedding preparation). But you can also ask a friend who is musically gifted to compose a song for you that would fit your choice of dance. Not only would you be able to call that song truly yours but it would indeed be unique and special.

ASK AN EXPERT

Pick on somebody else’s brain. Some couples would hire a wedding singer to entertain their guests during reception. You can use their expertise and experience with weddings and thus they could help you choose a song. Other couples would go out of their way to attend wedding dance classes just to make this day special, memorable and fun. If you are into one, you can also ask your instructor for suggestions. They might be able to give a song or two which they think would fit you and your partner’s personality.

Hopefully, after going through these simple pointers you have already narrowed down your list to a minimal or best, you have chosen the perfect song for your first dance. Your wedding is an important commencement to the new life that you are going to take. As much as possible enjoy the moment and don’t stress out too much about pleasing the guests (although you should please their palate with the food). Make a mental note that your first dance as husband and wife will define your relationship and would be your minor baptism of fire in moving together as one body.
